Do you have woodpeckers around your home? The last 3 years we’ve been visited by LARGE number of them. Recently we started hearing a noise rattling from the roof down through the wall of our home.  The woodpeckers were dropping acorns down through the plumbing vents on the roof. I found a great solution available at your favorite plumbing supplier.  A 2″ “snap in” floor drain.  The openings are too small for the woodpecker to deposit the acorns. 

I still haven’t found a way to stop them from pecking on their reflection in the stainless steel woodstove pipe though.

While many Californians have heard something about green methods directed towards buildings and energy conservation, it’s now official.  On January 1, 2011, California will require the incorporation of green building standards, within the building code.  The California Green Building Standards Code is known as CALGreen for short.

 

Among the new requirements under CALGreen, every new building in California will:

  • Reduce water consumption by 20 percent

  • Divert 50 percent of construction waste from landfills

  • Install low VOC materials

  • Separate indoor and outdoor water meters for nonresidential
    buildings

  • Moisture-sensing irrigation systems for large landscape
    projects will be required

  • Mandatory inspections of energy systems, such as furnaces and
    air conditioners for nonresidential buildings over 10,000 square
    feet.

This is the first-in-the-nation mandatory green building standards code. Once a building passes the inspection process, the property can then be labeled as CALGreen compliant.
